The Newsletter 01: Introduction to the efficiency.coffee Newsletter
Hello! Thank you for signing up for The Newsletter from efficiency.coffee. In this first edition, I am going to lay out my mission for efficiency.coffee and talk about what you can expect from The Newsletter.

efficiency.coffee Mission
My name is Jay Kling and efficiency.coffee is my small business. I am a green coffee buyer and Q grader with 9 years of experience in the coffee industry. I have a degree in Supply Chain Management and Entrepreneurship from Syracuse University. In my career as a buyer, I have noticed that there are many coffee professionals in green buying roles who do not have a background in supply chain or purchasing, but rather are sensory professionals, roasters, or entrepreneurs. Additionally, there are very few industry resources around green coffee buying and supply chain management.

My mission with efficiency.coffee is to create a resource hub specifically for green coffee buyers to access tools and information related to green coffee buying.

On my website, efficiency.coffee, green coffee buyers will find Excel spreadsheet templates for inventory management, buying plans, and cost of production analysis. My hope is that with greater access to information about strategic purchasing and efficient supply chain management, specialty coffee roasters can generate more profit, pay employees better, and be better able to pay high prices for green coffee – thereby becoming drivers of sustainability in the coffee industry.

What to expect from The Newsletter
With this newsletter, I hope to build a bank of written resources that supplement the Excel templates that are available on efficiency.coffee.

Topics that I will cover in The Newsletter include:
  • Fundamentals of Inventory Management for Green Coffee Buyers
  • Signs that your business has an inefficient green coffee supply chain
  • Calculating and understanding how much your business can pay for green coffee
  • Strategies around safety stock levels for coffee roasters
  • How much should my business be charging wholesale customers for coffee?
  • Calculating and understanding the capacity of your roasting facility
  • The importance of inventory reconciliation and how to do it
  • 5 things your coffee traders want you to know
  • How to use TBDs to lock in costs for your business
  • Interviews with professionals from different parts of the coffee supply chain

Thanks for reading!

In addition to being a resource hub for green coffee buyers, efficiency.coffee is a consulting and freelance green coffee buying business. You can hire me to help you build or re-organize a green coffee purchasing program or as a part-time, freelance green buyer! Reach out to [email protected] to inquire about working together.

Welcome to The Newsletter!

This newsletter will feature interviews with green coffee professionals. It is my goal to send the newsletter out quarterly.

In my career in coffee, I have had the great fortune of learning from many wonderful and intelligent people in different parts of the coffee industry. As we all know, coffee supply chains are large, international, and complex. Everyone who works in coffee has a unique perspective, and we are all always learning from each other.

My goal with this newsletter is to give a platform to people in different roles in the coffee industry and create a space for sharing knowledge and perspectives.
I so enjoy learning about what everyone does in coffee, and what they know that I might learn from.

If you're interested in talking to me about what you do in coffee, or have someone in mind who will let interview them, please let me know!

First post coming soon!
